JEE (Main/Advanced)

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to engineering colleges in India. It comprises two separate examinations – JEE Main, and JEE Advanced.

Earlier, the IIT-JEE (Indian Institutes of Technology–Joint Entrance Examination) was the test conducted for admission into the 5 IITs and IT-BHU (now renamed IIT-BHU). Between 2000 and 2005, an additional screening test was added to filter out top candidates for sitting for the main examination.

Meanwhile, in 2002, another pan-India level examination AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination) was set up for admissions for the B.Tech./B.E. courses offered by institutions other than the IITs.

In 2012, AIEEE was renamed JEE Main, and IIT-JEE was renamed JEE Advanced. JEE Main then became the screening examination for JEE Advanced for those students who wanted to try for admission into the IITs.

JEE Advanced (formerly IIT-JEE) has been regarded internationally as one of the most challenging undergraduate admission tests.
