Matter is anything which has mass and occupies space. The term "matter" encompasses all physical stuff that the Universe is made of. The other component of the Universe is energy, which, unlike matter, neither has mass nor does it occupy space.

Matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. There are 91 types of naturally occurring atoms, and they combine in different ways to give rise to matter with different properties. The science of chemistry goes into study of matter, its properties, and its interaction with other matter and with energy.

Matter can exist in one or more physical forms of solid, liquid and gas, and can also convert from one form to another with the involvement of energy.
